Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim and situated at the above sea level at the height of 5,500 ft. MG Marg

The most popular tourist market in Gangtok, MG Marg cannot be missed when in the city. Free of litter and smoke, this pedestrian-only zone is a good way to spend your evenings in Gangtok. Many restaurants and bars line its streets and a carnivalesque atmosphere prevails all year long. .

Flower Exhibition Centre

There is nothing quite so delightful as the sight of flowers bursting into bloom in the mountains. The chilly air and the silent ambience adds to the beauty of the sight and makes for a very memorable experience. The Flower Exhibition Centre on the Ridge above Gangtok is one such place. The exhibition centre features a dazzling variety of flowers, arranged in an open area and a closed enclosure.

Gangtok Ropeway

If you are considering doing something exciting and amusing during your stay at Gangtok, then the Gangtok Ropeway would be must-visit for you. Inaugurated in the year of 2003, the ropeway offers a breathtaking bird's eye view of the city and prompts an excellent photo-clicking session.

Ban Jhakri Waterfall

Located inside the landscaped Banjhakri Falls and Energy Park, the 100-foot Ban Jhakri Waterfall is a beautiful spot. Do Drul Chorten Stupa

A landmark sight in Gangtok, the Do Drul Chorten Stupa is a good place to visit in the city. Built-in 1945-46 by Trulshik Rinpoche, head of the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism, this stupa holds significance in the city because of its said ability to drive away evil spirits. It features the traditional 108 Mani Lhakor or prayer wheels of Buddhism which are supposed to have wish-granting properties. The golden top of the stupa enshrines the figure of Dorjee Phurpa or Vajra Kilaya.

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

A place where Tibetan Buddhism is studied and preserved in depth, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is a popular attraction in Gangtok. Since the region is heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, understanding it is a great way to understand the motivations of the local population Namgyal Institute of Tibetology allows visitors to do just this. Beautiful Tibetan architecture defines the building and its museum houses several statues, coins, scrolls with hand paintings & embroidery work (thangkas), Tibetan artworks and artefacts, as well as ancient manuscripts in Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese and Lepcha.

Tashi Viewpoint

The Tashi Viewpoint is one of the popular places to visit in Gangtok. Famed for its sunrises and sunsets as well as its startling views of the entire grand Himalayan mountain range, Tashi Viewpoint is a place that will leave you with some great pictures and countless memories. Viewing both the sunrise and the sunset here is a great idea.

Ganesh Tok

Ganesh Tok is one of the famous tourist places in Gangtok, renowned primarily for the intensity of the views visible from its complex. Located close to the Tashi View Point and the Bakthang falls, a visit to Ganesh Tok is a must on the local sightseeing circuit in Gangtok. The temple in the complex is dedicated to Lord Ganesh.

Hanuman Tok

Situated at an elevation of 7,200 feet, the Hanuman Tok is a famous temple located at the core of Gangtok. The beautiful piece of architecture worships Lord Hanuman and is managed as well as maintained by the respected Indian Army.

Himalayan Zoological Park

The Himalayan Zoological Park is one of the great tourist attractions in Gangtok. There is a lot that can be enjoyed inside this park including a dazzling variety of flora and fauna. Red Pandas, Himalayan Black Bears, Snow Leopards, Clouded Leopards, Barking Deer find a home here as do birds like Lady Amherst Pheasant, Kalij, Satyr Tragopan among others.

2. Paragliding

Fancy a bird’s-eye view of the lavish green hills, terraced rice fields and the monasteries in Gangtok? How about a stunning view of the Kanchenjunga in the distance? That’s paragliding for you, one of the most popular things to do in Gangtok. Flights are organized according to altitude and weather and you always have a certified pilot with you on these tandem flights, so you’re always safe.

3. Trekking

One of the biggest ‘it’ things to do in Gangtok is to go trekking across its many picturesque trails that take you through thick forests of poplar, birch, elm and oak trees, surprise clumps of exotic Orchids, wide expanses of terraced farmland and impromptu waterfalls with water clean enough to drink!

4. Visit the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

Whether or not you’re a Buddhist, a visit to the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology will leave you richer with its huge collection of spiritually and culturally important Buddhist artefacts, relics, books and manuscripts in the ancient Lepcha script among others; and thangkas (cloth paintings used in traditional prayers). One of the best known things to do in Gangtok, a visit to this institute/museum will be a unique experience.

5. Drive through the Nathu La Pass

Looking for a super exciting thing to do in Gangtok? Drive through the Nathu La Pass, a fortified border trading post between India and China, part of the ancient Silk Road and one of the most stunning motorable roads in the country. If it’s a clear day, you’ll be able to see the majestic Mt. Chomolhari and you can also climb up a flight of stairs to see the actual border and an army memorial.

6. Take a Yak Safari to the serene Tsomgo Lake

Another fun thing to do in Gangtok is to take a day trip to Tsomgo Lake, studded in a valley flanked by snow-topped mountains. Oh! And yeah, you’ll be on a Yak! Enjoy serene views across the lake, dip a toe or two in if you don’t mind the freezing water and take some awesome instagrammable pictures for an extra 100 followers.

7. Enjoy views of the city on a cable car ride

The city that was once just a dusty little village has grown to include a mishmash of residential and commercial buildings and you’ve just got to take a cable car ride to get some fascinating views. It’s a big ‘thing’ to do in Gangtok and you can’t be a serious tourist if you haven’t checked this one off your list!

8. Visit the beautiful monasteries

Visiting the many beautiful monasteries in and around the city is one of the most popular things to do in Gangtok. The structures are stunning examples of Tibetan architecture and give you a glimpse into the religion’s deeply spiritual world view. Some of the top monasteries you must visit are Rumtek, Tsuk La Khang, Pemayangtse and Enchey Gompa.

9. Spend a day at the Himalayan Zoological Park

Another thing to do in Gangtok that’s not included in most tourist check lists is a visit to the Himalayan Zoological Park. Spread over 205 hectares in forested mountain terrain, the zoo is home to a variety of Himalayan fauna like the nearly extinct Red Panda, the Snow Leopard, Monal Pheasant, Palm Civets, Black Bears and more. And not the usual iron grill enclosures for them; the animals live in enclosures that are similar to their natural habitat as closely as possible – a welcome change from most other zoos in the country.
